I had a date with my dad one fine day…..I remember when I was little, my dad used to take me to the book store and we would read & read & read until we needed to go home. My dad would be at some boring sections, mine at children literature area. When I was chosen to compete in Thai poetic storytelling (Sepha) among Elementary schools, I practiced with my dad everyday for months, and “we” finally won the first place. Well, actually, I won, but I think it was more like “we” than “I.” My dad is very cultured and we both love museum, so when he asked whether I wanted to go to MOCA with him, I happily said yes. And so we had a date that day looking around and talking about the art. It was a fine afternoon, I must say.
According to Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Bangkok, “This is the place where a long yet interesting history of Thai art is recorded and a perfect combination between the extraordinary traditional Thai art and the academic art known internationally is demonstrated. Inside contemporary art by Thai artists from different generations is exhibited so that from now on Thai uniqueness of art will be introduced worldwide.”
If you love art and plan to visit Thailand, you absolutely MUST visit this museum. It houses many incredible pieces from many Thai artists, one of which is Thawan Duchanee – a Thai National Artist in 2001. This museum reminded me of The Getty Villa in Malibu, in the sense that you will see the world of ancient Greece and Rome at The Getty Villa whereas you will feel as if you travel back through time to see how Thais lived and breathed in the old days at the MOCA just as well. I love many pieces at the museum, and want to share some of them with you here. However, my iPhone 5 photos don’t do the real pieces justice at all; you really have to come and experience how incredible and delicate those artworks are in person. I am in awe at how shocking stunning they ALL are.
If you are one to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York OR Louvre Museum in Paris, you must make time for MOCA in Bangkok.
